The Patriots Are Stuck in the Stone Age
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.2 часа назад
In 2000, there was this technology sweeping the nation called the internet and the world wide web, and during week 3 of the 2000 NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings were planning on hosting a webcast of the game on their website, just as they had done without issue for every game thus far. And the New England Patriots, seemingly not knowing what this was, refused to allow the Vikings to do it, le...

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Chuck Noll is one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NFL, but no coach can stay on top forever. And during week 8 of the 1991 NFL season, Noll said something after a 27-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks that left everyone wondering if he was all there, because it made no sense and deserves a deep dive nearly 30 years later Videos Mentioned: Chuck Noll's Go...

Predicting that a team is going to get blown out in a game is one thing; everyone does that from time to time. Heck, trash talking that a team is going to get blown out is also one thing. But what about a coach on one team, in a game that has nothing to do with his team, predicting that another team has no chance of winning? Well, during week 10 of the 1981 NFL season, in a game between the Buf...

He Held an NFL Record. He Had No Idea About It

In 1974, Dallas Cowboys punt returner Dennis Morgan returned a punt 97 yards to the house for a touchdown against the St. Louis Cardinals, setting a franchise record for the longest punt return ever, and being just one yard off the NFL record at the time for the longest punt return. The only problem? It was actually the NFL record. The statistician completely screwed up Videos Mentioned: Cowboy...
The Chiefs Cheated to Beat the Seahawks

The Kansas City Chiefs were involved in a massive controversy against the Seattle Seahawks during week 1 of the 1983 season when one scout got some, shall we say, illegal information on Seattle's offense and their snap count. Even in a joking manner, that's one bad way to hurt a teammate. Randle still holds the Cardinals record for most receiving yards in a game (256 against the Giants in 1962). And he was the last Cardinal on the roster from the Chicago era. Charley Winner hits the big 100 on July 2nd .... regardless of his Cardinals team flopping; that's a platinum trophy of life.

Years ago (before Cleveland and Detroit ever had their winless seasons), I was watching an NFL game with my dad. I can’t remember who was playing, but it was the last undefeated team. And wouldn’t you know it, that team lost. At the end of the game, the announcer said something about popping champagne in Miami. I must have been quite young, because I didn’t understand the reference. So I asked my dad about it and he explained about the 1972 Dolphins’ perfect season. Then I asked him if there was ever a team who didn’t win at all, and if they did anything after the last team finally won their first game. Dad’s response “They probably drink a beer in Tampa.” And since then, I think of the poor Tampa fans drowning their sorrows when the memories of those early Bucs teams come up.

The '85 Bears wouldn't have made the playoffs if they had the '77 Bucs' offense. As for McKay saying Bill Brundige didn't know anything about football, at that point, Brundige had a vastly better understanding of the pro game than McKay did. What McKay did at USC wouldn't work in the pros. I can't believe Anthony Davis and Ricky Bell didn't tell him that themselves.

Turning back the clock like that regarding internet/radio/tv coverage definitely is interesting. Two other turn-back-the-clock items from that particular game that I thought of while watching. 1) Tom Brady would have been in uniform for that game and it would have been funny to see him sitting on the far end of the bench while Drew Bledsoe toiled on the pitch ... given the circumstances that would unfold a season later. 2) While the action shots of the game were being shown, I chuckled looking at the stadium. Remember, this is 2000. so the Patriots' current stadium was under construction literallly right next to where this game was being. played. It's funny to see how old Foxboro Stadium looked in 2000, after just about 30 years of use. And now, many of the stadiums built in the `995-2005 range are considered old and out of date themselves. Finally, a question I don't have a clue about the answer to. But, I recall forever that Foxboro Stadium was always considered a nightmare of a place to get to and out of on game day. Yet, when the new stadium was built, it was in the exact same location, meaning the traffic woes that crippled Foxboro just were passed on to the suddenly aging Gillette Stadium.

This is very similar to what happened 3 years later during a 3rd Round FA Cup tie between Southampton & Tottenham. Like with the Vikings-Patriots game, there were multiple options to follow the action. The first (and most expensive) was to watch the match on Sky Sports via their PPV service since they had the rights to it. The other was to listen on the radio via the BBC on BBC Radio Southampton or BBC Radio 5 if you lived anywhere else in England. Due to the fact that Sky Sports had put the match behind a paywall, Southampton decided to offer a free webcast (more like a live stream since they would have a camera crew film the match) to their supporters who couldn't attend in person. However Tottenham threw a massive fit when they heard about this as their TV crew for Spurs TV (the team's TV channel) who were filming footage of the match for the weekly magazine/highlights show would likely be kicked out by the live stream crew. Tottenham asked the FA to ban Southampton from live streaming the match which the FA did not do mainly because Southampton was the home team & had the right to do whatever they wanted in terms of giving media credentials. The Spurs TV crew even if they were allowed into the stadium likely would have not gotten much positive highlights to show as their team got thrashed 4-0 by Southampton in one of the most embarrassing performances Tottenham has ever put on in the FA Cup.

Their refusal to allow the webcast to be based in Foxboro Stadium even with New England being geoblocked (commercial VPNs were a few years away) tells you all you need to know about how far they were behind the times. I doubt very many people in New England would've even tried to access the webcast anyway.

I’m sure Grossi will appreciate the shoutout. As far as the story goes, I used to turn the sound off during national broadcasts of the Lakers and Dodgers so I could hear two legendary broadcasters, Chick Hearn for Laker games and Vin Scully for Dodgers games, heck, people used to take radios to Dodger Stadium just to hear Vin, I don’t know if they still do after his retirement and subsequent passing, though. However, today, I’d rather watch Tom Grossi’s commentary rather than the broadcast of the NFL

A contract is a contract. Losing viewers has nothing to do with it. BCN had exclusive audio broadcast rights. That's the end of the story. Asking the Patriots was the wrong move as it was BCNs permission they needed. As for region locking content A) the Vikings didn't offer and B) what eventually became vpns were available back then. We had other work arounds as well. P.S. a ton of New Englanders have the game on the TV with no sound and the radio up because the local radio broadcast is infinitely better.
